Beating Exam Stress: A Practical Guide for Students and Parents

Small, science-backed habits that make a big difference
14 July 2026 by

A little exam nervousness is normal – it keeps you sharp. But too much stress hurts memory and focus. These simple habits help students stay calm and parents stay supportive.

For students

Break study into 45-minute focused blocks with short breaks. Sleep 7–8 hours – it is when your brain stores what you learned. Move your body daily, even a short walk. Practise slow breathing before an exam to steady your mind.

For parents

Praise effort, not just marks. Avoid comparisons with other children. Keep the home calm and the routine steady. Listen more than you lecture – sometimes your child just needs to be heard.

Warning signs to watch

Poor sleep, loss of appetite, constant irritability or withdrawal can signal that stress is too high. A short, kind conversation helps more than pressure.
